Poroshenko: Seven percent of Ukrainian territory occupied

Seven percent of Ukraine’s territory has now been seized by Russian-backed militants, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday

"Today, Ukraine is facing the most difficult times in its history,” Poroshenko said.
“Ukraine is facing aggression. This aggression came not only after the annexation of the Crimea. We are facing aggression because 7% of our territory is also occupied," he said.
As UNIAN reported earlier, Russia annexed the Ukrainian territory of Crimea in March after invading the peninsula with its troops, and then began to destabilize the situation in the Donbas. Later, the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics were created, with the direct participation of Russian special forces and the support of Russian army in the Donbas, according to Ukraine.
According to a growing body of evidence, Russia also supplies weapons to the insurgents of the DPR and LPR and sends its mercenaries and regular troops to Donbas.

Mikheil Saakashvili

Right now I am sharing experience with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in Kyiv on something we Georgians have known too well: hundreds of Russian tanks, armored vehicles and grad system crossing an international border and attacking villages and towns. And the world hesitating how to call it. Well, it is neither a separatist conflict, nor a terrorist attack, even less a “Russian counter-attack" (when did Ukrainians attack the Russian territory???). It is an invasion. And a war. Why won’t the international community call it by its name? I think there are more important things going on in our region now than just pouring ice water on one’s head. The fate of Ukraine, Georgia and all Russian neighbors are now at stake in Donetsk, Luhansk, Mariupol.

Slava Ukraine!

RUSSIA INVADES TO UKRAINE!!!
US: Russian-directed Counteroffensive is Underway in Ukraine

сша

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Wednesday that Russian incursions in southeastern Ukraine “indicate a Russian-directed counteroffensive is likely underway in Donetsk and Luhansk.”

Ukraine reported that pro-Russian rebel forces entered a strategically critical town in the southeast on Wednesday.

"We've also seen reports of separatists shelling residential areas in a coastal town between the border and Mariupol, and we have seen reports of heavy fighting and shelling near the city and airport in Donetsk," Psaki told reporters.

Psaki said the news was "of deep concern to us."

"We're also concerned by the Russian government's unwillingness to tell the truth even as its soldiers are found 30 miles inside Ukraine," Psaki said. "Russia is sending its young men into Ukraine, but are telling - are not telling them where they're going or telling their parents what they're doing."

A reporter asked Psaki why she used the word "likely" rather than outright confirming that a counteroffensive is underway.

"I decided to say 'likely,'" Psaki replied.

"I wouldn't be saying it," she added, "if we weren't as concerned as my comments indicate."

I don't expect extremists to take a break, Yatsenyuk

The Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has stated that people of Ukraine celebrates the 69th anniversary of the liberation of Ukraine and Europe from Nazi Germany and for the first time it occurs under the conditions of war.

"This war is not declared officially, however it is the real war, waged by Russian regime against Ukraine. For the first time since 1941 the enemy crossed the Ukrainian border, violated its territorial integrity, annexed a part of our country, smuggled its saboteurs in Ukraine. Ukrainians are peaceful nation which never attacks first but we were left no choice now but to resort to arms. It looks like we were taken back to the 1930s, using the time machine. The shocking rhetoric of the neighbor state leader is similar to that time", Yatsenyuk's address says.
The Prime Minister has emphasized that Ukraine began to appreciate even more the deeds of those who fought for peace 69 years ago and competed for Ukraine and its future under the different flags after facing the external aggression and terrorists now.
Yatsenyuk has asked the Ukrainian patriots, irrespective of their ideological views, to refrain from any actions that may be used by the enemies of Ukraine in the informational war against our country.

"I didn't hope that the extremists will take a break in their bloody affairs even for this day. The leaders of the state is informed about the black plans of Russian saboteurs and their mercenaries and take all measures to ensure safety, but we are opposed by the people who have no moral commandments", he emphasized.

Ukraine Foreign Ministry regards Putin's idea as farce, rejects talks with terrorists

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has issued a statement regarding remarks made by the Russian and Swiss presidents on the intentions to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine.
The statement notes that despite the appearance of gestures of "goodwill," the content and rhetoric that were announced in the Kremlin have nothing to do with a true search for a solution to the crisis.
"Russia should first fulfill its Geneva obligations and distance itself from the activity of terrorists in east Ukraine, publicly call on separatist groups to lay down arms and stop the subversive activity of sabotage groups. The withdrawal of Russian military forces from the Ukrainian borders should be confirmed by real facts," the ministry said.
"Any 'terrorist referendums' in the east of our country are illegitimate by definition. Therefore any calls for their 'postponement' are not a sign of goodwill, but a mere farce. Russia has already realized such a scenario in Crimea," reads the statement.
"The unconditional priority of the Ukrainian government is to establish full-scale national dialogue that will involve political forces and representatives of the regions and society. All of the necessary conditions of peace and security should be created for such dialogue. But holding any dialogue with terrorists is impossible and unthinkable," the ministry said.

Russia's aggression against Ukraine is the greatest challenge to Europe's security in a generation.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said this at a briefing in Warsaw, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
"Russia's illegal and illegitimate aggression against Ukraine is the greatest challenge to Europe's security in a generation. So we have rightly reinforced the defense of our allies," Rasmussen said.
He said that ships and aircraft from across NATO were currently present from the Baltic to the Black Sea.
"We stand ready to take further steps, with enhanced exercises, updated defense plans, and appropriate deployments. We have also reinforced our support to Ukraine. For example, by helping to strengthen its defense reforms and the protection of critical infrastructure," Rasmussen said.
He said that NATO had sent an unmistakable message to Russia that its behavior does not belong in the 21st century, whereas its rhetoric draws on obscure cliches of the Cold War.
Rasmussen also said that to compare what happened in Kyiv in February 2014 with what is happening today in eastern Ukraine was "totally misleading" and "hypocritical."
"Public protests against any government are part of democracy. But violent pro-Russian separatists, armed with heavy weapons, who occupy public building and who take hostages, are not part of any democracy. And if these groups swear open allegiance to Russia, whose troops are massed on Ukraineэs borders, and who has grabbed a piece of Ukraine, that is not democracy," he said.

Turchynov: Human life is the highest value

Human life is and always remains the highest value for Ukrainians.

"So having gone through the war years and knowing the true value of peace, the Ukrainians have always wanted good relations with all other peoples. Our state is making successive steps regarding partnership, cooperation, full-scale participation in international programs on security and stability on the planet," Turchynov said.
The United Nations declared May 8 and 9 the Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War.

Kyiv expects real evidences of Russian troops withdrawal from borders, MFA

Foreign Ministry of Ukraine has criticized the discussion between the presidents of Russian and Switzerland on the situation in Ukraine without the participation of the Ukrainian party.

Despite a front of the "good faith" gesture, the content and rhetoric that were voiced at the Kremlin have nothing in common with true search of a settlement. Discussion of a peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine, but without Ukraine is senseless and unacceptable. We need real action instead of the statements, the press service of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine reports.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry suggests first of all Russia should implement obligations assumed under Geneva accords and distance itself from terrorist activities in the east of Ukraine, publicly call upon separatist units to lay down the arms and cease subversive actions.
Withdrawal of Russian armed forces from Ukrainian borders should be genuinely confirmed, MFA emphasized.
Foreign Ministry has added that any so-called "terrorist referendums" in the east of Ukraine are illegal by definition, thus, an appeal to «postpone» them is just a mockery.
"Substitution of notions should be terminated. There is no civil war in Ukraine. The essence of the conflict is aggression of the Russian Federation against our country, occupation of Crimea and impudent interference in internal affairs, accompanied by support for terrorist actions against Ukrainian citizens and territorial integrity of the state", – MFA says.
It is noticed in the statement that a full-scale national dialogue with all political actors, regional representatives and the civil society is an absolute priority of the Government of Ukraine, however the dialogue with terrorists is impermissible.
Ukraine welcomes and supports the important role of the OSCE in international efforts aimed at de-escalating the situation. Particularly valuable will be those efforts of the Organization that will facilitate continuation of a nationwide dialogue in Ukraine, implementation of a mandate of the Special Monitoring Mission and engagement of international observers to monitor the elections of the President of Ukraine on May 25, 2014. The statements made on May 7 in Moscow demonstrate the first results of consolidated international pressure on the Kremlin in response to the aggression committed against Ukraine, the statement says.
